iTunes-RadioPandora did a double take earlier this fall when it first cut free listening to 40 hours per month per mobile device, and then quickly re-instated an unlimited threshold as iTunes radio was launched. iTunes radio is Apple’s answer to services like Pandora, Spotify and Slacker Radio but so far it doesn’t seem to be killing Pandora.

In Triton Media’s latest metrics on internet radio, released on Monday, Pandora still has a strangle hold on the number one spot.

Radio industry website allaccess.com reported that Pandora posted listenership of 1.47 billion hours in October which was up 18% from October 2012. On the other hand though, Pandora saw a dip in active listeners from 72.7 million in September to 70.9 million in October.

Triton didn’t measure iTunes Radio in it’s latest data however Apple’s CEO Tim Cook reported that 20 million people have used iTunes radio to listen to over one billion songs. This isn’t measured in hours the same way that Triton measures the top internet broadcasters though. In retrospect 20 million people, of over 600 million Apple account holders, isn’t quite the adoption that Apple was hoping for.
