morpheus2Rumors have been floating around the interwebs for a while now that Sony has been developing a virtual reality headset similar to the popular Oculus Rift. At GDC 2014 Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide President, Shu Yoshida confirmed this with “Project Morpheus” a headset with 90 degree field of view and 1080p resolution. The Oculus Rift that everyone has been drooling over has it beat on field of view, but “Project Morpheus” is also still in development as well so the final product may or may not have the aforementioned 90 degree field of view when consumers are able to get their hands on it. As for a price or release date your guess is as good as ours right now.

Shu Yoshida shown off a brief video of a “hacked” God of War 3 in which he looked through the eyes of the chain sword wielding Kratos. One can only imagine how viscerally satisfying it is to rip a harpy in half in virtual reality.  But lets not get ahead of ourselves, Sony R&D’s Richard Marks and Anton Mikhailov made it very clear that “Project Morpheus” is still a work in progress. Other non-gaming uses were also thrown out there such as a project with NASA to let people walk around the Mars Rover, checking hotel rooms before you book them , “immersive science”, and other possible uses in schools.

Sony announced this at GDC 2014 hoping to grab the attention of development community and they most certainly have done just that. Makers of virtually every gaming engine you can think of have already sided with Sony and Morpheus. Among those that will be working with Sony are Epic, Crytek, Havok, Unity and Autodesk. With the Oculus Rift on PC and now “Project Morpheus” on PS4 only time will tell if Microsoft or other developers decide to throw their hats into the virtual reality ring as well.
