It seems like ages since we have said anything about Sprint. Well, just when you thought the company may have disappeared altogether, Sprint has just lifted the curtains on a new pricing campaign aimed squarely at AT&T and Verizon. The move is somewhat similar to T-Mobile’s whole ditch your carrier program. Ina Fried, of Re/code broke the story:
Under the terms of the deal, which kicks off Friday, a customer can bring a current AT&T or Verizon bill to a Sprint store and store representatives will set up a new plan that is half of the service portion of that bill (the cost of calls, texting and data). In addition to that service cost, though, customers have to buy an unsubsidized device, either up front, through installments or using one of Sprint’s new leasing plans.1
While to prospects of cutting your wireless bill in half sounds pretty good, there are a few caveats. As noted in the quote above, you have to buy an unsubsidized device. If you have never bought a device off-contract, it can be a pricey purchase. For example, both the iPhone 6 and the new Nexus 6 off contract starts well above $600. If you are not in the market for the top of the line, there are plenty of affordable options available. Anyhow, it is good to see some signs of life from Sprint. It is hard to say how much this will help the struggling carrier though.
