On Tuesday, 25 March 2014, HTC released the new HTC One (M8). The HTC One M8 is the follow up to the best selling HTC device of all time: the HTC One. While there is an awful lot to be excited about, but the aspect of the new phone that instantly catches your eye is the addition of several new color choices. Unlike the HTC One – which offered red, black, and silver finishes – the HTC One M8 comes in ‘Gun Metal Grey,’ ‘Glacial Silver,’ and ‘Amber Gold.’

To begin with, the HTC One M8 is powered by a 2.1GHz quad-core Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 800 Processor, has 2GB of RAM and has either 16 or 32GB internal memory with up to 128GB via a MicroSD card. The device has a 5.0 inch, Full HD 1080p screen; all of the standard sensors: accelerometer, proximity sensor, ambient light sensor, gyro sensor, barometer sensor; pre-loaded with Android 4.4.2; 4G LTE compatible; a 2600 mAh batter, which HTC claims can last up to 20 hours of talk time on 3G, and up to 496 hours of standby time on 3G.

There are a lot of powerful new features as well.HTC One Camera

The camera on the HTC One M8 is pretty remarkable. The front-facing camera is pretty standard: 5 megapixel with HDR capability, 1080p HD video recording. The rear camera, or rather cameras, is where it gets really interesting.

The back-facing, primary camera features a 4-UltraPixel lens – UltraPixels being 2.0 um in size, much larger than standard pixel. Further, the camera is capable of capturing 1080p full HD video recording at 48.3 frames per second. The added camera – the top camera in the image above – is used only to capture depth information, and is used in adding photo effects, as well as photo editing. The added camera is also utilized in HTC’s new UFocus feature. This new feature is used to change and alter focus after a picture is taken.

Blink feedBlinkFeed is held over from the original HTC One. BlinkFeed “transforms the home screen into a single live stream of personally relevant information such as social updates, news and photos. HTC BlinkFeed provides fresh content at a glance without the need to switch between applications”1

HTC also unveiled a new Dot View case for the One M8:

The Dot View case, reminiscent of the old Lite-Brite, is a flip case with tons of super small holes. These holes allow light through, and display time, weather, caller id, notifications and more without having to unlock the phone. Kind of a new take on the Active Display of the Moto X.

Perhaps in a move aimed to grab some of Samsung’s sales, the HTC One M8 is available right now on Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T. It will be available from T-Mobile beginning on April 11, 2014 at $0 down and $26.50 a month.
