I was joking with a few friends at the last Apple press event that Apple had effectively killed the dreams of anyone making money off of a flashlight app with the release of iOS 7. Now it looks like Apple is about to take a big chunk out of another business, the iPhone display repair business.
While some may not realize it, fixing Apple displays is big business. There are kiosks, mall locations, mail in shops, and websites that are making a huge amount of money by offering to replace broken iPhone and iPad screens. The parts are reasonably priced and there is a premium price paid to get an iPhone repaired, especially if it’s fast.
Well Apple may be destroying those businesses as they move to add iPhone display repair in their Apple store units. Currently minor repairs on Apple products are completed in the store. Also, customers who have internal hardware issues can usually get a phone swapped out the same day by taking it into the Apple store, as long as it’s under warranty or AppleCare.
On Wednesday 9to5Mac reported that part of their new retail strategy is to offer on the spot iPhone repair. This new service will allow customers to have their phone back quicker and save money in Apple repair stores.
According to the 9to5Mac report Apple will begin providing machinery that will be used to calibrate the displays. Display fixes will cost $149 and an Apple store employee told us that iPhone displays repaired by Apple will still be covered by warranties and Apple care.
