Blackberry, Thorstein HeinsUnfortunately this headline is not uncommon. Blackberry continues to go through changes.

As we reported earlier this month, Blackberry’s “innovative” CEO Thorstein Heins is out after the latest failed attempt for the company to sell itself. In his place, Fairfax, Blackberry’s biggest investor, has installed former CEO of Sybase, John Chen in his place.

Now the Verge is reporting, via Yahoo, that Chen is already cleaning up shop, displacing three top level Blackberry executives. COO Kristian Tear, CMO Frank Boulben and financial Chief Brian Bidulka are all out.

Blackberry has raised another $1 billion dollars in funding in hopes that Chen can use that money to put Blackberry back on the map.

Former Blackberry Co-CEO’s Jim Balsille and Mike Lazaridis, sharply underestimated the iPhone and then Android revolution. Blackberry was once the preferred device for enterprise and the first device manufacturer to offer email on a handset. When the iPhone was released in 2007, the Waterloo Canada based Blackberry failed to act. They didn’t bring a touch screen only phone to the market until the Blackberry Storm until the winter of 2008. That device was met with harsh criticism for being clunky and not as feature packed as it’s Apple competitor.

Blackberry didn’t release a touchscreen phone comparable to the iPhone or the latest Android devices until earlier this year with the Blackberry 10 OS and the z10. By that time it was too late.

The Thorstein Heins era was short lived and now it’s over. Chen seems focused on restoring Blackberry to a player in the handset, and enterprise business. “I will continue to align my senior management team and organizational structure, and refine the Company’s strategy to ensure we deliver the best devices, mobile security and device management.” he said in a statement issued this morning.
