This is the Cliq case, “a touch sensitive smartphone case that puts the things you need most at the tip of your fingers.”¹ The case comes equipped with three buttons, that can perform a total of six different actions/shortcuts. The case is completely wireless and requires no charge. The actions/shortcuts are programmed through an app, and can perform just about any task:

As a smartcase with the aim of simplifying and speeding up your smartphone experience, here are some of the many things Cliq can do:

• Launch your camera, flashlight, or any other app
• Provide full music control
• Send a prewritten text
• Share your location in the event of an emergency
• Simplify battery life management²

The Cliq is also available in a soft skin.

Though the Cliq team is understandably silent on the finer details of the technology powering the case, but it does use Near Field Communications (NFC):

We use Near Field Communication (NFC) technology to wirelessly connect with your phone. But, this is not your average NFC technology, this is more like NFC 2.0. All wrapped up in a patent pending NFC module small enough to allow Cliq to look like any other case.³

The initial launch of these cases will be on Android only, and then only for Samsung’s Galaxy S4, S5, Note 3, Motorola’s Moto X, LG Nexus 5, and the LG G2. As the creators note, the nature of the smart case lends itself to the Android OS:

From the outset, Cliq was made for Android. The openness of the platform and adoption of NFC has allowed us to do some really cool stuff. We want to make sure that everyone who wants to take Cliq to the next level is able to have the same freedom. Cliq will be reprogrammable so it can be used with Tasker, Automateit, and many other great IFTTT style apps. We hope people will geek out and make contextual buttons and find all sorts of exciting ways to integrate the case into their lives. Cliq is proud to be Android first, and we hope to offer cases for more phones in the near future.⁴
