When most people think about a “gay app” or an app targeted towards the gay community, they almost always, stereo typically think of a hook up app, or an app to meet people like Grinderr. We really should be at a day and age where “gay app” isn’t synonymous with shirtless guys and hooking up. Unfortunately that’s not often the case.
That’s why the crew at Distinc.tt have set out to change the course of gay social app. Their web page says they’r for the “hiker in you” immediately highlighting that this social community is about the gay community finding each other to do more than just shop, drink coffee, listen to Rhinana and hook up.
CEO Michael Belkin said he’s launching Distinc.tt because he became “disgusted by the tasteless torsos and imagery on gay social sites and apps.” and because he wants ”the good-taste part of the gay stereotype to gain traction with advertisers and cross the mainstream divide.”
Many tech press outlets picked up on a story published on Saturday by Cnet. The headline “Apple approves only gay social app for ages 12 and up” leading to a firestorm of bad press, feedback and forum squawk. The article did a pretty good job of describing the app but the headline left many to think that Distinc.tt would become a place for pedophiles to lurk in the corners waiting for young, out boys, much they way xy.com did.
Rest assured the target for Distinc.tt is all members of the LGBT community looking to find places to work out with each other, coffee shops that may not be exclusively gay but where gay students hang out, even walking trails and camp sites. Many gay men and women aren’t searching for exclusively gay places to hang out and things to do, but rather gender and preference neutral places where gay people are welcome.
“We’re using world-class technology and design to solve problems faced by the LGBT consumer,” Belkin said.
Because it’s not a sex or dating app, Apple approved the app for people 12 and over.
It appears that Distinc.tt is looking to make sure their social network for the LGBT community, stays just that, a social network for all members of the LGBT community.
