Everyone knows that Facebook, the world’s biggest social network began at Harvard University in Cambridge Massachusetts. We also know to well the story of Boston investment firms missing out on a company that could have made them billions of dollars.
It’s been widely noted that at least Boston VC giant Battery Ventures was at least one of the firms that passed on Facebook before they moved to California. Zuckerberg admits at that time they weren’t even trying to make a company they just made Facebook because it was fun and “it was awesome” our friends at Bostinno reported. As to meeting with Battery Ventures Zuckerberg said ““I barely remember that but I agree that it happened,” he recalled. “I don’t think I said anything and Eduardo said some things and they didn’t want to do it, and it was fine because I didn’t want to do that anyway,”
Now Boston is a top 10 city for venture capital in the United States and that’s widely attributed to Facebook. Even without investing in the social network investors saw Facebook as a wake up call saying, hey there are great companies here.
In that same interview Zuckerbeg said that if he could do it all over they would have stayed in Boston. He also said he didn’t think it would work in Boston but at least he would have stayed there.
Now years later GigaOm is reporting that Facebook has now opened an engineering office in Boston at the Cambridge Innovation Center building in Kendall Square. Without getting into too many specifics Facebook’s Jay Parikh and Ryan Mack have said that office will concentrate on four core areas “networking, compilers, security and storage” reported GigaOm.
Facebook has attributed the Boston office not to going back to their roots but because of the wide talent pool available in the Harvard area.
