We all know that Dong Nguyen was onto something with his hit game Flappy Bird. Many sites have estimated that the game is pulling in $50,000 a day in ad revenue. It’s an addictive little game where the user tries to get the bird through as many pipes as possible without running into them. There was a helicopter game back in 2007 that was just as addicting, with not quite as good graphics.
But then, all of the sudden, Nguyen said he couldn’t take the notoriety anymore. He started taking to his Twitter account, actually complaining about the fame and fortune his game had created. So with barely enough time to drive the last remaining downloads, he pulled the game from the iOS app store and the Google Play Store over the weekend.
Rest assured, if you downloaded it prior to the takedown you can still play it, he just won’t support it any longer. The ads are also still intact, even after an update was sent just prior to his taking the game down. So, Nguyen is still bringing in ad revenue.
No one will know for sure, at least not right now, why he truly took the game down. Some have speculated he may have been under legal pressure from other companies with similar games, or possibly even Nintendo, who own the marks for Super Mario Brothers. The pipes in Flappy Bird are spitting images of the pipes in Super Mario.
We also speculated that Nguyen may be looking for a buyer. Who needs $50,000 a day when he could try and sell the game for hundreds of millions.
Well at least two enterprising iPhone owners are looking to cash in on the Flappy Bird Phenomena. Gamespot reported this morning that two iPhone’s with Flappy Bird installed are both nearing $100,000 on ebay. This one is up to $99,900 and this one is up to $90,200 at the time of this writing. If you’re looking for a deal, there’s this one that just started at $300.
So at this point, perhaps you’re bidding on a piece of history!
