It’s hard to believe that the phenomena known as Flappy Bird may be going away, as soon as later today.
Business Insider reported earlier today that the game’s developer, Dong Nguyen, tweeted that in 22 hours the game would go away.
Business Insider’s Nicholas Carlson says that Nguyen isn’t one for the limelight. Nguyen considers himself an indie game developer and the fury around Flappy Bird may be too much for him to handle.
Others have suggested it’s a ploy to have the game acquired quickly while it’s still popular. Last week it was the number one game in the iTunes App Store. According to Business Insider, Flappy Bird is doing $50,000 a day in revenue.
While it’s still short of the popularity of Draw Something, many remember that during it’s heyday the developer, OMGPOP was acquired for $180 million dollars by Zynga.
Almost as soon as the ink dried and the money hit OMGPOP’s account, the game started to lose popularity, rapidly.
Now, the entire OMGPOP operation has been shut down.
Nguyen could be hoping by tweeting that he wants to shut it down, a larger company will swoop (or in his case flap) in and acquire the title for millions of dollars.
For many, hopefully he will have a change of heart. But in any case if you were considering getting the game you should literally do it, right now.
