Chris Baker, the former Creative Director at viral website Buzzfeed left his job last month in hopes to relieve headaches of millions of internet users worldwide.
Baker, who also founded a site called unbaby.me, is taking the technology from unbaby.me and expanding it to an easy to use customizable interface for anyone to block anything. You see the way unbaby.me works is that when you sign up for the service it automatically removes all Facebook posts about friends’ newborns from it’s users newsfeeds, report Business Insider.
Baker was able to launch that site for $500 and today it has over 230,000 users. The site blocks your Facebook newsfeed from words like, “Baby”, “mommy” and adorable. Now you can sift trough all of your other friend’s important information like what they had for breakfast.
That’s where the beauty of Rather comes in. If you rather not view posts about food, lasagne, steak or the world series, you’ can use Rather to block those terms. You may opt to add words like ObamaCare and Twitter IPO, then you’ll see how boring Facebook really is.
Baker has been known for these crazy ideas that go viral, which is why his position at BuzzFeed was such a great fit. Prior to Unbaby.me he launched a site called TheWorldsMostExclusiveWebsite. It used your Klout score and Twitter following to see how exclusive you really were. The more followers and higher the Klout score you had, the more doors you could open.
Today, Katy Perry and Justin Bieber would be the only people to be able to get access to the 8th and most exclusive door.
Baker told Business Insider the idea for that site came when his ex was trying to get early access to Fab.com. Before launch Fab said if you left them three friends’ email addresses to send invites to, you would get early access. When he asked his ex what Fab was she said she didn’t know yet the stigma around the exclusivity of the sign up process made her want to do it.
TheWorldsMostExclusiveWebsite was nothing more than pictures of doors but it got people like Kim Kardashian, who tried to get to door number 8 four different times, talking about it on Twitter. Ryan Seacrest bragged about reaching it to door number 5.
As for Rather, it won’t be as uber exclusive or excitin as TheWorldsMostExclusiveWebsite but what it will do is solve a real problem for Facebook users. Now instead of saying “I’m going to block the next person who says ObamaCare” you can just block the word, and poof it’s gone.
