When Kansas City became the second city in America with 1gb fiber ethernet (Chattanooga was the first), the rest of the company started chomping at the bit to hopefully get a piece of the new internet service provided by Google called Google Fiber. While some people look at Google as evil, we know that they’ve been chomping at the bit as well, to rollout their fiber service in other cities.
Well on Wednesday Google announced a list of regions and cities that they are considering for the next wave of Google Fiber. Currently, Google Fiber serves Kansas City, Provo Utah and Austin Texas.
Google has identified nine regions where they will first complete a Google Fiber ready checklist and then work with city leaders and officials to see if bringing Google Fiber to their city is a viable possibility. That also includes performing a city study. This study will look at the costs and timelines for building a new fiber optic network. Google will also evaluate construction plans, topography, housing density and condition of local infrastructure.
The nine regions chosen for evaluation are:
Raleigh Durham, NC
Charlotte, NC
Atlanta, GA
San Antonio, TX
Salt Lake City, UT
Phoenix, AZ
Portland, OR
San Jose, CA
The biggest question on everyone’s mind now is the timeline for Google Fiber expansion. Google hopes to do all the preliminary work and research and then announce which regions will actually get Google Fiber service by the end of the year. From there, and based on their work in Provo, Kansas City and Austin, it should take about a year to roll out the service.
