Apparently, Google is weighing the idea of launching its own wireless network. This proposed network would only cover the ares that already have access to the Google Fiber network. According to The Information:

Google executives in recent months discussed their hope to offer a full-fledged wireless service in markets where it offers Google Fiber Internet and TV service, according to two people who have discussed the matter with Google. Such an offering would mean Google customers in places like Kansas City, Mo. could get voice and Internet access through their mobile devices wherever they go.1

Further, The Verge notes that the although there are not many details around the proposed wireless network, it would be of the “mobile virtual network operator or MVNO,” variety. Meaning that Google would buy access to a larger network, like Verizon or AT&T, and resell access to customers.2

Currently, Google FIber is available in Provo, UT, Kansas City, MO, and Austin, TX with planned expansion into Atlanta, GA, Charlotte and Raleigh-Durham, NC, Nashville, TN, San Antonio, TX, Phoenix, AZ, San Jose, CA, and Portland, OR. It will be interesting to see if this turns out to be true.
