There are a ton of educational games and apps aimed at young children. However, most of these are just that, educational games. Educational apps are almost inherently work/goal oriented. As such, they not really games; they are more like dressed up math problems. We just came across a company that makes games for young children. Not dressed up math problems under the guise of “educational games,” but pure games: Kapu Toys. We had a chance to ask the Kapu Toys team a few questions about their digital toy box:
Kapu Toys
What is Kapu Toys?
We create digital toys for mobile devices for 1-6 year olds. We believe in fun and clever apps that spark the imagination, inspire families to play together and let kids learn along the way! We support children in taking their first digital steps in a safe environment by avoiding rising difficulty levels, time limits and high scores. That’s actually why we call our apps “toys” rather than games.
Who is Kapu for? Little kids?
We focus on creating fun apps (mainly on Apple’s iOS and Android, but constantly monitoring on speading the Kapu world to other plateforms as well) for not only the children, but for the whole family. Our mission is to bring them back together in an era where the lives easily tends to focus on single.
What makes Kapu Toys Unique?
With our apps, there’s no wrong way to play: everything the kids do will make them work. We believe in learning through play, so our main design principle is to create play mechanisms that teaches the kids new things as well as entertain them. We aim to build a safe digital environment and a brand that the families can trust by maintaining top-notch quality in everything we do. Rather than following strict business goals, our main priority is still to give away smiles. And by maintaining honesty and following our design principles, we believe the results will come.
Tell us about your team and their backgrounds
Kapu Toys was founded in the early 2012 to create apps exclusively for small children age 1-6+. The founding members worked in various advertising companies, and for some of the world’s biggest brands in digital design, development and planning.
One of the main driving forces was to fill the gap between classic toys and digital medium – to bring back the golden era when children were given challenges rather than easily digestible solutions. So in other words, to act as the analog ambassadors for the digital generation. The company’s DNA can be summarised in four simple words: smile, educate, activate and inspire.
What do your current goals look like?
One of our design principle is to constantly go forward with the style and execution of the digital toys. We’re actually not aiming to be the biggest company in the markets, but one of those which always come up with quality products and solutions.
