Before Google sold of Motorola, it seems that the company had a working prototype of the fabled Google Watch. Although there are reports of a Google/LG smartwatch coming as early as June of 2014, it appears that the Mountain View company already has experience in building such a product.
These leaked images, posted on Android Police, show what appears to be an incredibly early prototype that Motorola and Google were working on in 2013.1 According to the Android Police article, “we had heard of a Motorola prototype previously – a prototype that may have been scrapped in favor of a new design from the manufacturer who made the Nexus 4 and 5.”2 Although the pictured device is a prototype, and could have been completely scrapped by this time, the design is not to unique or inspiring. To this point, you removed the branding from every single smartwatch, throw them all in a hat and pick at random and be hard pressed to identify the maker.
This above image, however, is pretty interesting. According to the Android Police article, “Here’s one more image, showing (as a commenter rightly points out below) that the piece at the end of the band which snaps into the holes in the band flips out to reveal a USB connector, used for charging the device.”3 Although such a design would hinder the ability to personalize and customize the watch band, this is a uniqe approach to charging and connecting the device to a computer. Android Police reached out to Motorola for a comment on the watch, and received the following response on Twitter:
Rick – We are working on a watch that will be available this year. We aim to address consumer issues like style & battery life #MotoMWC
