A few days ago, on May 6, Google released a massive update to Google Maps. This update comes packed with a ton of new features. Among these features is one that users have been requesting for a long time, lane guidance.

The Google Maps app now shows you which lane to stay in or move to so you’ll never find yourself driving for miles down the wrong road. You’ll also have easy access to alternate routes while you’re navigating, so you can choose the best drive for you.1

MapsWhen you are approaching an intersection with several different lanes, Google Maps will now tell you exactly where you need to be to follow the route. Further, the updated Google Maps now gives users the ability to change routes. “If traffic conditions change during navigation and a quicker route becomes available, Faster route now available will appear on your screen. The screen will also display a zoomed-out image of the map with the new route highlighted in blue and an estimated time savings.”2

What’s even more, the Google Maps app has added a much more robust offline mode. While this feature has been around for a while, Google has made it more intuitive to use. Simply pull up a map of an area, tap the place info sheet, and save it for offline use. Pretty simple. What’s more, you can add custom names for the offline maps.

The update to Google Maps also lets users make use of the huge database of public transit information. Specifically, users can now specify depart and arrival times for public transit:

With more than a million public transit stops on Google Maps, you’ll get reliable information to help you get where you’re going. Next time you’re in Chicago, search for directions to Lincoln Park Zoo, tap the train icon, and select “Depart at” to choose the time and day you want to leave—or even “last train home” for those night owls—so you get the most accurate transit information for your needs.3

Overall, this is an excellent update, giving Google Maps a ton of new useful features.
