Another theme that was running throughout the 2014 International CES (really every CES) was hardware. There were tons of booths showing off various gadgets and devices. One such exhibitor was MYBELL. Their product really stands out for several reasons. One, it serves a valuable purpose. Two, it is extremely simple to use. And three, although the device is not for sale yet, it looks like it will be priced somewhere between $50-80. The simplicity of use and the relatively low projected price point gives the MYBELL a strong shot at becoming a huge commercial success. Often times, CES exhibitors show off wild products that have little to no chance at becoming commercially successful. That said, if we had to bet on a few products from this years CES to become successful, MYBELL would definitely be one.
So what exactly is it?
MYBELL is a customizable electronic bicycle bell. Think about MYBELL as ringtones for your bicycle. Users can upload any audio file to the bell via a micro-USB connection. The company has a few sample bell sounds on their website, including a lion roar and an old timey car horn, but the possibilities are endless. Further, these sounds are projected from the MYBELL volumes at up to 96 decibels, about 10X louder that traditional bike bells and horns. Also, MYBELL has three LED lights built in, adding to user safety.
We are not the only ones who think MYBELL is a great idea, the company has won several competitions and awards: New York’s Next Top Makers, Engadget’s Insert Coin, and Miller Lite’s Tap the Future. MYBELL was also awarded the Editor’s Choice Awards at the World Maker Faire.
At CES, we had a chance to speak with Peter Pottier, one of the Co-Founders of MYBELL. He told us about the customizable bell and gave us a demo of the product in action:
MYBELL is not yet available for purchase, but be on the look out for the launch of their crowdfunding campaign in the near future.
