While many have speculated that Apple was going to be entering the wearable space with an iWatch a new patent shows that Apple may be working on a 3D style headset similar to the Oculus Rift. The patent describes the device as personal display system for viewing content such as movies or TV shows on the go which sounds somewhat similar to Google Glass. As for design Apple is apparently looking at something more comparable to a ski glass that would have a removable cover that could be replaced with a customized option if preferred.
Inside the goggles would likely be two separate displays that would work to give a 3D style feel to the device and be able to display separate images in each eye. In addition the patent describes some technology that could adjust the image that is sent to each lens to compensate for those who are visually impaired. This would be a huge benefit as these users wouldn’t need to fit the device over their existing glasses and instead they could use them in place of the glasses.
While the patent filing doesn’t mean that Apple will be making use of this technology in the near future, but it does show that Apple is definitely interested in the wearable space. With technology always on the change it is so hard to stay ahead of the curve, but Apple seems to know what they are doing and while they may not always be first to do something they generally do roll out a well polished version when they do.
Would you be interested in a 3D headset from Apple, or would you rather they put their research dollars into something else?
