In the lead up to the 2014 International CES, one of the exhibitors we were most looking forward to seeing was Parrot. The company certainly met, even exceeded, out expectations. Parrot is, “a global leader in wireless devices for mobile phones, stands on the cutting edge of innovation.”1 The company makes a wide variety of products, from auto tablets, to headphones, to speakers, and they even make iOS powered drone (left). However, the device that really stood out was the Parrot Flower Power. This is not to take anything away from the AR Drone, the thing is awesome. The Flower Power just seems to have much more of a mass market appeal, and is perfect for just about anyone. So what is the Flower Power?
Parrot Flower Power
The Parrot Flower Power is a sensor that tracks plant health. According to Parrot’s announcement blog post (the emphasis is theirs):
Parrot brings the Internet to your garden with Parrot Flower Power, the first smart wireless sensor equipped with Bluetooth Smart technology that connects to your mobile device and accompanies you in the maintenance of your plants, thanks to a dedicated application which was developed in collaboration with international botanists. In a pot or in open ground, Parrot Flower Power monitors and analyzes 4 criteria that are crucial to plant growth: soil moisture, fertilizer, ambient temperature and light intensity. 2
To help visualize and act on the data that the Flower Power collects, there is a free Parrot Flower Power App. The app will serve you alerts when your plant needs water, fertilizer, light, or a change in temperature. Essentially, the Parrot Flower Power is Gardening for Dummies. We had a chance to speak with one of Parrot’s booth representatives at CES:
The Flower Power is available on Amazon from $59.99
