This holiday season video game consoles make a triumphant return. Sure last year we saw the Wii U but it floundered in comparison to what sales of a new Xbox and new PlayStation will likely do. The PS4 and the Xbox One have both been available for preorder from Amazon, Best Buy, Gamestop and other retailers for months, preparing for a huge season which will kick off with each systems release later this month.
As Sony prepares for launch of the PlayStation 4 the company took some time on Wednesday to let the world know that the PlayStation 3 has sold 80 million units and is now seven years old. In fact the people at Engadget are having a hard time coming to grips with the fact that the PlayStation 3 was released in November of 2006.
What’s even more amazing than the system sales is game sales. Worldwide there are 4332 PS3 titles. There are also over 220,000 different downloadable options. Nearly 500 million games have been sold for the system worldwide.
When the PS3 was released in 2006 Sony was supposed to have 400,000 units ready for the US but actually had 200,000 units available. Geek.com’s Matthew Humphries reported that the fulfillment problem stemmed from diodes in the then expensive BluRay players that the PlayStation 3 was built around. The PS4 is relying on mostly stock x86 components which are readily available.
Sony will launch the new PS 4 on November 15th. The company is reporting that every preorder will be filled on launch day. They’ve also stated that over 1.5 million units have been preordered in the United States.
Sony is launching the PS4 a week before Microsoft launches the XBox One. They are hoping to attract those gamers who can only afford to buy one system, ahead of the other system’s launch. To help attract those customers they’ve also priced the PS4 $100 less than the Xbox One.
