Rap Genius, the company that translates the meanings of the lyrics in rap songs, big news stories and even Andrew Masons resignation letter from Groupon, has quickly become one of the world’s biggest sites for hip hop and lyric fans. The humorous site takes some of the best rap lyrics and gives them the most literal meanings possible.
Take this lyric from Macklemore’s grammy winning record, “Same Love”
” When I was in the 3rd grade, I thought that I was gay, cause I could draw…” Macklemore says as the song opens.
“When he was a child he thought that he was homosexual because he excelled at artistic things, which are considered to be more feminine than traditional masculine activities like sports according to common stereotypes.”
The site stays extremely current and the community adds to, or annotates the translation. But one of the draw backs to Rap Genius was that they didn’t have a mobile app. Well that’s all changed now as Mashable reports that Rap Genius is officially available for iOS. Mashable writes “that brings the site’s text capabilities to mobile along with a Shazam-like feature for discovering new artists and their lyrics.”
“This is the true launch of Rap Genius. Right now, more than half of our traffic comes from mobile devices. Soon, it will be 100% – In 1,000 years, when the aliens land, “Rap Genius” will literally mean “that dope iPhone app,” company founder Tom Lehman said in a press release that was also annotated like song lyrics on rapgenius.com.
Rap Genius translates Lehman’s first remark as “Using the app makes me feel like a virgin…touched for the very first time…”
Rap Genius integrates with iTunes by giving the user instant access to lyrics for all of the songs in a users iTunes library, including the songs currently playing with Genius Recognition Technology. The Rap Genius iOS app also allows you to hold your phone up to hear music around you, the same way that Shazam does, and then it gives you the annotated lyrics you would find on their website.
Unfortunately for some, the Genius by Rap Genius app is only available for iOS 7 or better, but if you have an iOS 7 device you can download it right now, right here.
