Sensors for weight loss and health tracking are nothing new. Fitbit and Nike+ reign supreme in the category for having a sensor (or band) and a mobile app to let you track your work out, weight loss and lifestyle. GolfSense is a sensor and app combination that helps you learn to swing your golf club better. Zepp Labs the company behind GolfSense also has a sensor for tennis racquets, baseball bats and other sporting goods. The internet of things has arrived in a big way in sports and recreation.
Sk8trakr is the latest sensor and mobile app combination to come into the space. The sensor is installed between a skateboards trucks and the board itself and is designed to keep up with the tricks that you do on your skateboard.
Everything is tracked using a mobile app and then you can share that same info with all of your skate buddies via social media.
Sk8trakr bills themselves as augmented reality for skaters and they’re looking to raise $50,000 by early December in their Indiegogo campaign.
The app has trick detection which can tell what trick you’ve just completed on your skateboard and then can show you the results of your trick on your phone. Sk8trakr saves all of your progress. Users can check where and when they landed each trick and then keep track of their progress through the mobile app.
Social integration allows you to have a “virtual” skate tournament with friends at the same skate park or clear across the country. Users get their own progile on the Sk8trakr website and they can keep up with their favorite skaters. Users can even challenge skaters to top their own tricks as a user adds them to their timeline.
The team behind Sk8trakr already has a working prototype and they’re about to unveil version two which should be even more durable then the test version. They also have a working version of the detection algorithm and are looking forward to shipping early bird units in May.
