Just days after the release of the Sony Playstation 4 reports started pouring in that many units were shipped bricked and upset customers were stuck with a broken box of nothing. While some challenges are expected during a big launch, if what Sony has said is true, reports may have been exaggerated.
While early reports from people who picked up the PlayStation 4 on launch day may have scared away some later customers, it turns out that there is a 99% chance your PlayStation 4 will be just fine. The Washington Post reported last week that Sonny has confirmed only 1% of the launch day units were affected by this new “Blue light of death”.
“There have been several issues reported, which leads us to believe there isn’t a singular problem that could impact a broader percentage of PS4 units,” Sonyn spokesman Dan Race said in a statement. Sony had issued a statement on launch day that said that the faulty units fell “within the expected range for a new product introduction.”
Some reports suggested that hundreds of thousands of units had shipped bricked and unusable but that was far from the case.
Meanwhile, Microsoft launched their Xbox One this past Friday and they seem to be having equally as many problems, if not more. The problem on the Xbox One is coming from a faulty disc drive.
While Sony launched the PlayStation 4 in North America only, Microsoft released the Xbox One across 13 different countries. Microsoft had reported Friday evening that they had sold over 1 million units but Sony fans were quick to dismiss that based on geography.
As for the issues Microsoft is having, The International Business TImes is reporting that a problem with a faulty disc drive may affect more units than previously reported. One of the earliest reviews on Amazon for the Xbox One is indicative of a disc drive problem where the drive spins up but doesn’t do anything further than that.
Popular gaming site Kotaku reported on Sunday that they have received more than 150 complaints of what they’re dubbing the “Disc Drive of Doom”. The disc drives on the faulty units aren’t allowing users to play game and when they do spin up with a game in the drive there is a grinding noise. IBT reports that while there are a couple other Xbox One issues, the disc drive issue is the one most widely reported on the Xbox One support forums.
