Just last week we reported that Facebook was opening up a satellite engineering office at the Cambridge Innovation Center building in Kendall Square. The Cambridge Innovation Center serves as part incubator, part co-working space, part educational space, part startup space and part accelerator. Twitter has now also taken up residency at a similar space in Washington DC.
DC’s 1776 is a startup hub, co-working space, meetings space, incubator, accelerator and liason connecting tech businesses to government and enterprise leaders in the nation’s capital.
It’s that proximity to capitol hill that has attracted newly public company Twitter to take up space in the entire 9th floor of the 1776 building, conveniently located across the street from Jeff Bezos, Washington Post.
There’s been no “public” announcement about it except this property excerpt published in DC’s Business Journal:
1133 15th St. NW: Interior renovation to 9th-floor office space for tenant “Twitter DC.” This is likely a lobbying shop for the social media giant, which is fresh off its successful IPO. D.C.’s tech startup campus and accelerator, 1776, is three floors up. The 201,000-square-foot building is owned by Clark Enterprises Inc. Twitter made its first local hire in November 2010, naming Adam Sharp as government liaison.
The Business Journal is probably correct in assuming that this space if for lobbying efforts and also to continue to build government relations.
Twitter played a key role in the social strategies of newly elected New Jersey Senator Corey Booker, and Virginia Governor Elect Terry McAuliffe. Twitter was also an instrumental part of the social strategy for both the 2008 and 2012 Obama for President campaigns.
