Were you a Waze user? Are you familiar with the app that crowdsourced traffic data while commuters were en route to their destination, making it easier for others to take or avoid the same route?
Despite some thinking that Waze would be a gigantic distraction to driving the crowdsourced traffic data app took off. People were using it to inform other motorists of accidents, slow traffic and even speed traps that could potentially be in the routes of future travelers. This data allowed Waze to quickly calculate and offer alternate routes in real time and in a more efficient manner than most of the traffic apps currently backing GPS systems.
That’s why Google got into a three way competition with Apple and Facebook to acquire the company. It was eventually reported that Google paid $966 million dollars for the Israeli company. At that time they immediately folded the company into Google and brought Waze’s technology team into the Google maps team. Once the acquisition was announced Waze users started waiting for the technology to integrate into Google Maps.
Our good friend Russell Holly at Geek.com reported on Tuesday that the integration with Waze is now starting to show up.
The iOS and Android version of the popular Google Maps GPS app have been updated to include new dynamic rerouting.
Now, while you’re traveling along following Google Maps, if a quicker route becomes available a pop up will come up inviting you to change routes. If you opt to change routes clicking on the new route will instantly put you on the quicker option. If you elect not to take the quicker route and stay the course, the pop up will disappear after 30 seconds.
With Waze now integrated into Google Maps, the directions should get even better because there are so many more Google Maps users.
What are you waiting for, go take your Google Maps update now.
