It’s hard to believe that the Big Android BBQ is going into it’s 5th event. I was one of the original co-founders alongside Aaron Kasten the founder of Android Swag and several other mobile and technology related entities. The Big Android BBQ is the Android developer’s version of MacWorld a fan/developer founded event for Mac lovers, users and developers.
The first Big Android BBQ was held in Austin Texas in October of 2010 and brought together Android developers and enthusiasts from across the globe, along with manufacturers and development partners like Samsung, HTC, and the Cyanogen Mod team just to name a few.
In 2013 the event was moved to Hurst to be more centrally located in the Dallas region. Many of the original BBQ attendees were flying into Dallas and then driving to Austin when flights to Austin were booked or more expensive. Now the Big Android BBQ is a short drive from the airport in Dallas.
The Big Android BBQ is part exhibition, part conference, part fellowship and part food. Of course there’s BBQ it’s called the Big Android BBQ for goodness sakes. The food has been overseen by Android enthusiast, tech writer, pastor and charcoal master Ray Walters a former host of the Android Guys podcast. Ray’s Kansas City BBQ is infused with personality he could only get from the Boston area, but it really and truly is one of the reasons that so many people come back to the event.
Hundreds of Android developers, enthusiasts and users come to Texas for the Big Android BBQ. Even high profile developers like Steve Kondik (Cyanogen), Kush Dutta and several others come to speak, and even mix and mingle.
The Big Android BBQ is a chance for aspiring developers to experience over 20 sessions devoted to developing on the Android platform, and let’s not kid ourselves Android is now about much more than just the latest smartphone. We’ve seen Android on wearable technologies (even Google Glass) and even USB sticks setting out to change the world. So no matter what you’re into when it comes to Android or how far along you are in your developer skills, there’s a ton for you at the Big Android BBQ at a fraction (not even a fraction more like a fraction of a fraction) of the cost of Google’s annual developer conference Google I/O.
The Big Android BBQ team just uploaded their 2014 site and set the dates for Friday October 17th and Saturday October 18th at the Hurst Convention Center in Hurst Texas. They haven’t announced ticket prices or availability just yet but Kasten told us that’s coming very soon, so keep your eyes peeled here at Techfaster.com and here at bigandroidbbq.com
