Numerous outlets reported Sunday that Apple has acquired Israeli tech company PrimeSense for $345 million. Steven Scheer, a Jerusalem based reporter for Reuters reported that this was Apple’s second Israeli startup acquisition, with Anobit being it’s first.
Many hard core tech enthusiasts and gamers know that PrimeSense is the company behind the 3d technology found in the original version of the Kinect system.
While the acquisition reports made their rounds around the Internet PrimeSense issued this statement to Reuters:
“We are focused on building a prosperous company while bringing 3D sensing and natural interaction to the mass market in a variety of markets such as interactive living room and mobile devices,” a spokeswoman for PrimeSense said. “We do not comment on what any of our partners, customers or potential customers are doing and we do not relate to rumors or recycled rumors.”
It’s believed that Apple wants to put a 3d gesture based element into it’s future Apple TV devices. It’s been widely rumored for the last three years that Apple is going to make an entire TV in addition to the set top box they currently have on the market. Having a Kinect type interface on an Apple TV would mean that you could scroll through your favorite shows and services with your voice and with gesture controls.
Some tech pundits also think this acquisition, which was originally rumored back in July, may also have something to do with future Apple computers so users could gesture control their Macbooks and Imacs.
We’ll have to wait and see what Apple has in mind for PrimeSensse.
