Apple-logoIt looks like Apple could be headed into the health business. Reports from 9to5Mac and The Verge both suggest that Apple has some solid plans to offer some heath and wellness related apps that could be baked directly into the next version of iOS.

9to5Mac said early Friday that Apple was working on combining the expected iWatch along with iOS 8 to “redefine mobile heath, fitness tracking”.

According to 9to5mac Apple is working on a new app called HealthBook. This new app is supposed to track and store fitness information on a users iOS device. It’s also expected to keep track of a user’s vital signs and other medical information, and even possibly go as far as to become a conduit for EMR (Electronic medical records). It seems Apple wants to make having access to medical information, as easy as using their Passbook app which stores credit cards, gift cards, reward cards and tickets.

The Healthbook app is expected to allow for fitness monitoring. Presumably combined with the forthcoming iWatch, Healthbook will be capable of monitoring and storing fitness statistics like steps taken, calories burned, and miles walked.

Then, on the health side of Healthbook, the app will also be able to monitor a user’s vital signs.

“The application will be able to track a person’s blood pressure, hydration levels, heart rate, and potentially several other blood-related data points, such as glucose levels, according to our sources.” “The software is also programmed to allow users to enter details about their medications so that they could be reminded to take pills at scheduled times. This will likely integrate with iOS’s existing Reminders application.” 9to5mac said

9to5mac and The Verge reported that two top ranking executives have met with the FDDA in Washington DC. These meetings appeared on the FDA’s public website, but it’s unclear as to what they were meeting about exactly.

If Healthbook just provides this monitoring analysis of user input fields, like Fitbit or any one of the other monitor apps, the FDA would not need to approve the app. However if they are doing more with EMR (electronic medical records) they would most definitely need the FDA’s approval at some point.

For now we can wait and see but it looks like we will get a touch of something related to HealthBook in th fall.
