FiveFiftyIt seems the original instant/daily deals app is back and going for a shot at standing on it’s own two feet. Ben Tyson, the founder of Five & Fifty, is a serial entrepreneur, an adventurer and the youngest ever inductee into the Pipeline Entrepreneurial Fellowship for his work on Google Earth, so he has some pedigree when it comes to making and creating things.

One of those things that he created was Five & Fifty, an app that was a finalist in 2011in Jason Calcanis’ Launch Competition in San Francisco. His app was one of the first “instant” or “flash” deal apps, back before it became the in thing to do thanks to Groupon and Living Social. In fact, Tech Cocktail called Five & Fifty “the best thing since sliced bread”.

During the heyday of both daily deals apps, that have since followed wayward paths, Tyson watched, waited and worked on other things. Sure enough, Living Social and Groupon aren’t the deal machines they used to be. “they couldn’t keep things simple. Now, over 2 years later, Groupon Now and Living Social Instant have failed…but the problems in the market still exist!” Tyson says on his OneSpark profile page.

Tyson has studied what happened to the other daily deals sites that made them ultimately change paths. Basically to sum it all up, both Living Social and Groupon made things to complicated and too clunky. Right now most apps that are gaining steam or even just surviving with a sustainable user base and sustainable income aren’t particularly new ideas, but rather ideas done better. Kind of like Apple. It takes a moment to stomach that idea but Apple didn’t really “create” anything they just made things much better, and the root of that for Apple has always been design and simplicity.

That’s what Tyson is bringing to the table with the newly reworked and re-released Five & Fifty.

FiveandFiftyConsumers sign up for Five & Fifty by giving the app their cell phone number and a couple other pieces of key information. That’s it. Five & Fifty uses text messages instead of email to make sure the deals stay relevant, because they only last five hours. Hence the five in their name.

Businesses sign up for Five and Fifty using their admin dashboard. There’s no long grueling process to go through and no bullpen of telesales people waiting to upsell a better package, that ultimately ends up costing a lot more than it gains at the business level. After the business signs up for Five & Fifty, they create their deals and are charged a flat fee which can be as little as $5.

The big requirements for the business is that the deal can only las five hours and has to be for 50% off or more. This means there’s no pre buying deals, no fulfillment required, no printing coupons and no sifting through junk mail. That’s it, it’s that easy, Five and Fifty is ready to win.

The Five and Fifty team is coming to OneSpark all the way from Denver. They’ll be stationed at Hemming Plaza during the world’s crowdfunding festival.
