A little over a week ago the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) eased up on their restrictions surrounding Personal Electronic Devices (PEDs).
On October 31st the FAA announced that passengers would be able to use PED’s gate to gate, or from the time they took off until the time they landed. Previously, PED’s needed to be stowed during taxi, takeoff and landing. Passengers were free to use their devices when planes were above 10,000 feet. The new regulations provide no restrictions except the use of radios on electronic devices meaning no using the phone and no texting.
GoGo, the company that provides inflight WIFI to most US airlines is now offering passengers on some flights the ability to send and receive text messages and phone calls while in the air.
GoGo will be offering a new app called GoGo Text and Talk. It will allow passengers the ability to use their own devices to send text messages and make phone calls via a wifi relaying process once the plane they are traveling on reaches an altitude of 30,000 feet. The service will be available on most GoGo flights beginning in early 2014, however for the immediate future domestic flights will only enjoy the text part of the app.
Customers who use GoGo’s inflight wifi have a variety of ways to send text messages already. If you pay for GoGo InFlight Internet you can use the Wifi and your computer to send text messages via iChat, Google Talk, Google Hangouts and Google Voice. Many business customers can’t wait until they can use their own smartphone for texting.
BusinessInsider reports that GoGo will offer the Text and Talk service separate from the price of their WiFi service.
