iPadMini1When Apple announced the new iPad Air and the new iPad Mini with Retina Display earlier this year, Apple seamed poised for a great holiday season. They company had two new iPhone models and two new iPad models, something the holidays has never seen before in the past.

Apple’s iPad Air hit the street they seemed to be in good supply. Even when third party retailers like big box stores and wireless carriers run out of the new 10″ version of the iPad they are quickly replenished. The same isn’t true for the new iPad Mini with Retina Display.

The newest version of the iPad family pits their “magical” Retina Display, with their smaller form factor which proves to be more functional in mini arenas. The newest iPad mini has been well regarded in the tech press, some calling it “the best iPad yet”. With a price point the same as previous iPad mini models, it was bound to be a hot item this holiday season.

Apple quickly took the iPad 4th generation off the market, the fourth generation, the first 10″ ipad with a lightning connector, replaced the 3rd generation, which was the first iPad with retina display. Both are now gone from store shelves and the choices are iPad Air and iPad Mini.

BGR reported on Monday that Chris Whitmore, an analyst with Deutsche Bank, polled over 100 retail outlets over the weekend to gauge supply and demand for the newest iPad products. As expected Whitmore found that supply on the iPad Mini with Retina Display was lower than that of 10″ thinner model. Whitmore found that 13% of Apple stores were out of the WiFi only version of the iPad Mini with Retina Display. 20% of Apple stores were out of the cellular enabled version.

Whitmore also found that 3rd party retailers like Best Buy and Verizon Wireless stores found stock levels at 50% or in some cases totally sold out. This increased demand, while burdensome for customers right now, is a great indicator for Apple. Stock levels aren’t expected to level out until sometime next year. Probably just in time for the next generation of iPads.
