Most of the top engineers in the world admit that as kids they started their enormous love of engineering with Lego’s. No other toy has had such a profound impact on an industry as the little snap together blocks that help embrace ones imagination and creative problem solving.
Every year thousands of people build enormous Lego creations. The Lego company actually hosts building events at local shopping malls, theme parks and other large public areas to build larger than life statues out of Legos. In fact there are theme parks and discovery centers devoted to Legos, not to mention Ikea stores look like they’re made out of Legos.
Gizmag reports that an ambitious duo from Romania have developed an air powered Lego car out of 500,000 pieces.
The open air Lego car is powered by a top secret arrangement of Lego pieces and pump parts. The car is driven by four orbital engines each holding 256 pistons or 64 per Lego engine block.
The investors and engineers behind the Lego car wouldn’t reveal things like drivetrain, horsepower and torque ratings but it is an actual drivable car, capable of reaching speeds of 18mph. The designers purposely kept the speed low as to avoid any Lego explosions from the 256 Lego cylinders.
The entire car isnt made out of Legos. Parts of the steering mechanism, wheels, tires and load baring components are all made out of metal. The rest of the car is 100% pure lego including the doors, chasis, steering wheel, seats and windscreen.
The project was funded by over 40 investors through a crowdfunding portal and the duo Raul Oaida, and Steve Sammartino apparently have more cool lego projects on the horizon.
