Most people know that form, function and design are very important to Swedish companies. Mix that in with simplicity and affordable pricing and you have a recipe thats worked for the biggest international furniture chain in the world, Ikea.
It’s those same principles of form, function, design, simplicity and affordability that are driving Swedish designer Daniel Ahman and his company, DandyCan.
Ahman is looking to create a new class of headphones that sound amazing, are made with the best quality materials for the best price, and that are meant to last a long time. Ahman was upset with the el-cheapo headphones that often break after a few months in the earpieces, ear cushions or cords. He also knows that today’s pricier headphones aren’t about sound quality but rather the name of the rapper that appears on the headphones (Dre, Ludacris or 50 Cent).
Ahman’s new DandyCan’s fall in the middle of those two categories and with replaceable cords and ear cushions, they’re designed to last for years.
We got a chance to talk with Ahman about his company and his new take on headphones.
What does your company do?
We want to offer people headphones that are durable, beautiful and with good acoustics.
Who/what is your product aimed at? Who is the target user?
Urban people that cares about lifestyle.
Why did you build you product? What problem are you taking on?
I decided to design these headphones because I was fed up with crappy headphones that breaks. One problem is that you need to get new ones often because they break and that feels like a unsound disposable culture. Another problem is that they feel and sound like crap.
How is your product different from what is currently available?
It is all metal and leather and the mechanics are built to last and the parts that usually wears out are interchangeable. It is also sleek looking.
Tell us your founding story. Was there an “ah ha” moment?
It was when i went out to buy headphones for the twentieth time and i thought: -” why are the headphones so crappy?”
What’s the next step? What are your short-term goals?
My first goal is to reach the crowdfunding goal and then I want to spread the product. Later I would like to come with a smaller on the ear headphone and maybe one over ear with the same style and quality.
