Their are Minecraft apps, 3D printing websites, tons of merchandise, and a revolution of sorts happening around the popular, retro 8 bit game. It seems that most of the Minecraft merchandise you can purchase has been officially licensed from Mojang, the developer of the game. However there seems to be a lot of piracy and knockoffs, as there are with most popular titles.
One thing that appealed to Minecraft fans though was Mojang’s ability to look the other way when fans got creative with Youtube movies and other projects based on the game itself. The company seems to be from the school of thought that these kinds of projects only help the exploding brand.
That wasn’t the case with Brandon Laatsch, a film maker who had taken to the popular Kickstarter website to launch a movie based on Minecraft.
Laatsch was looking for $600,000 to finance the production up to the final run of a movie that was believed to bridge real life people with the props and 8 bit designs Minectraft users love. In fact Laatch’s campaign had raised over $63,000 on Kickstarter, over 10% of what he needed to complete the movie. So it was gaining popularity fast.
So did Laatsch get Mojang’s blessing on the movie? Well according to Minecraft’s creator Markus Pearson, Laatsch had no deal in place to create a movie based on their intellectual property. While Mojang has allowed fan films in the past, there hasn’t been one as ambitious as Laatsch’s before now, reports Gamer Headliner.
With backers of the kickstarter project visibly upset they took to Twitter to get answers from Pearson who finally replied with the tweet below.
For now that means we may have to wait for Mojang to get their own deal in place before we see Minecraft on the big screen.
