“Short sale” doesn’t seem to be in the vocabulary of Sony Electronics these days. First day sale numbers for their next gen console the PlayStation 4 are in and they sold through every bit of 1 million units on day one. Now that also includes all pre-orders from the likes of Amazon, Best Buy, Game Stop and other retailers, but there seemed to be a decent amount of store stock that sold through as well.
We polled all of the Atlanta area Best Buy stores as well as the Best Buy stores in Dallas and the Baltimore/DC area on Saturday morning and all of the stores were out of stock. Now most stores told us that they expected more as early as next week. If Sony can prove that they can fill demand that will be one big advantage in the console wars shaping up this holiday season.
Sony released the PlayStation 4 first in North America. They will introduce the system in Europe and Latin America on November 29th according to Business Insider.
Sony has said they plan on selling 3 million units by the end of the year and 5 million units by the time their fiscal year ends in March. By the looks of it they should meet those goals.
However, Sony has one big obstacle ahead of it coming this Friday when Microsoft’s XBox One goes on sale in the United States. Both companies have been hitting hard with marketing efforts. Sony has commercials, teaser videos and social media marketing in full swing. Microsoft does as well but one thing we noticed was that Microsoft is drawing on sports games and other things that would appeal to the whole family. Sony’s messaging seems to be much darker and “weird” like this unboxing video.
What system are you getting this holiday season let us know in the comments below.
