At first glance you might think that a service that allows you to record, download and save all of your favorite movies and shows from the likes of Hulu, HBO Go and Netflix, would be illegal. But it’s not.
My good friend KT Bradford turned me onto PlayLater after she dissected the service over at DigitalTrends.
KT knows that I travel all the time, that I don’t have cable and that I watch movies and tv whenever I can on the road. We’ve traveled overseas together many times for press events. She knew that PlayLater would be right up my alley especially since I stopped downloading torrents four or five years ago.
But it still sounded too good to be true.
PlayLater functions like your normal DVR with your online subscription services being the “channels”. The kicker, which makes PlayLater legal is the fact that you have to have an account with whatever service you want to record. For instance you can’t download and record something on NetFlix if you don’t have a subscription to Netflix. A little gray area which says if you have a license for the service you can watch it anytime is the loophole that makes PlayLater totally legit.
Now PlayLater actually does the recording on your PC desktop or laptop and unfortunately for now it’s only available for Windows. Once you’ve selected or told PlayLater what to record the finished product is an mp4 ready for viewing on your computer, laptop, tablet or phone. You can sync them over to your device by USB or by iTunes and again it’s totally legal.
PlayLater supports just about every online viewing app/service there is. For the complete walk through check out KT’s piece over at Digital Trends
