It’s no secret in mere units Android is far outpacing the iPhone, simply because there are more units to choose from and the point of entry is much lower, in some cases free. Apple tried to compete on the cheap side with the iPhone 5C but when push came to shove there wasn’t much value in the value proposition of the iPhone 5c.
Venturebeat’s John Koetsier reported yesterday that the Google Play store is seeing 25% more downloads than it’s rival the iTunes app store.
In addition to barrier to entry and the vast amount of Android devices, the biggest factor driving Google Play over iTunes are international markets.
“The increase in Google Play’s downloads was primarily driven by Brazil and Argentina with [ Brazil ] climbing one spot in the rankings to number 4 behind the U.S., South Korea and India,” App Annie reported.
The flip side to this news is the fact that the iTunes app store still towers the Google Play store in revenue generation. It’s long been believed that Android users don’t see the value in paying for apps with so many free apps available. The curation over the iTunes app store is a lot more thorough then it is in the Google Play store. Also developers are still tremendously loyal to iOS.
In Q2 2013 the iOS app store saw 2.3x app revenue growth of the Google Play store. Google narrowed the lead in Q3 to 2.1x
