Over the weekend at least 10 people sent us a story about a woman who stabbed three people to get the last Xbox One. Fortunately, that story was published on The Daily Currant, a satire site similar to The Onion. The story’s intent was to highlight the ridiculousness that is Black Friday.
Unfortunately, for 22 year old Ikenna Uwakah of Daly City California, the story that appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle, is true. The chronicle reports that Uwakah was preparing to sell at Playstation 4 that he had listed on an online classified site, that was not Craigslist. Uwakah had arranged to meet the proposed buyer on Sunday afternoon at an agreed upon location.
At the agreed upon meeting time Uwakah’s girlfriend drove him to meet 21 year old Ronnie Collins of San Francisco. However, before the exchange was to occur, Collins shot Uwakah multiple times as he was sitting in the passenger seat of his girlfriend’s car. It’s unclear whether or not the Playstation 4 actually exchanged hands. It’s also unclear how police apprehended Collins, who is being charged with murder and attempted robbery according to police Sgt Danielle Newman.
While many believe that Sony did not purposely “short sell” the Playstation 4, it has been in very high demand this holiday season. Gamestop stores, as well as Best Buy and Target locations have all received multiple shipments of the next gen console, but in limited quantities causing the PS4 to sell out quickly. Sellers have the Playstatin 4 listed on Craigslist and Oodle in multiple cities for anywhere from $500-$1000 dollars. The base system at the store costs $399.
Uwakah’s sister, Uzoma Uwakah, told the Chronicle it wasn’t uncommon for her brother to sell things on sites like Craigslist. She did not say whether or not the victim had purchased the Playstation 4 specifically to sell online.
It’s just a video game console people.
