Does the way the wireless business operates have absolutely anything to do with World Cup Soccer? No it does not. Unless of course you’re John Legere run T-Mobile, then at has everything to do with wireless carriers and contracts.
That’s the stretch that T-Mobile is going for an advertisement featuring their newest spokesperson Shakira.
The unique, and relatively funny ad, asks in the beginning “What if soccer had wireless rules?”.
Immediately following that one of the teams in the game scores a goal with a header. An all out Mardi Gras style celebration commences on the field. Fans, dancers, and the press swarm the field and Shakira takes to the stage in a celebratory singing of her World Cup Song La La La.
The mood is intense, kind of like when the Seahawks won the Super Bowl. But then the referee blows his whistle and says “unlimited headers are not included in your contract, no goal”.
The referee proceeds to get airlifted out of the arena by some man in a reverse parachute suit of some kind and the partying continues. “T-Mobile is changing the rules of the game” flashes at the end of the ad.
Adage reports that this latest ad comes right on the heels of yet another forthcoming announcement from T-Mobile in regards to their un-carrier strategy. At this point no one knows what they’ll work in next, free phones?
One thing’s for sure, the world is focusing on the current World Cup in Brazil and T-Mobile injecting itself in to the conversation, even with a silly ad, makes a lot of sense.
Even with a $32 billion dollar deal with Sprint in the works, it’s still business as usual for T-Mobile. We can expect that until the ink dries on the deal we’ll continue to see T-Mobile’s aggressive push to gain more customers. We could actually see this type of advertising continue post merger as most sources suggest that Legere will lead the new combined company.
