In my own opinion, I think augmented reality is one of the coolest things out there. There has been, to-date, a very narrow use case with AR, and it almost seems as all the big players have abandoned it. AR is sort of a sleeping giant. There are a few applications for AR, but most have been pretty tame. That said, we just came across one of the more interesting, albeit tame as well, applications of AR.
Vidy has built out an interesting AR app. The app allows you to sort-of embed videos in pictures. The process is pretty simple. You go to the Vidy website, paste the link of a YouTube video or upload your own video, then select the associated image. Then, you can print out the image. Vidy adds a code around the image, similar to a QR code, when it prints:
When you view this picture through the Vidy app, it transforms the image into a video, within the picture frame:
This is a pretty interesting concept, but it seems that it is a short ways off. The company is currently running a crowdfunding campaign on Ulule – a French website that is just about an exact clone of Kickstarter. While that all sounds pretty tame, their explainer video does a good job at showing the capabilities of the app:
