Make no mistake about it, Gamestop is not a ‘kids” store. Sure you take your kids in there for the latest and greatest games, but Gamestop, has a generation. It’s actually my generation.
At a few years shy of 40 I remember spending many a day in my local mall. The day long trip as a mall rat back then meant spending many hours between Sam Goody, Babbages, and Electronic’s Boutique, of course both Babbages and Electronics Boutique eventually became Gamestop. The walls weren’t lined with Xbox One, PS4 and DSI, but rather original Nintendo, Sega Genesis and the earliest of console games.
It was my generation that was the first to experience Gamestop. I still go in there at least once a week, of course as a tech geek I have just about every current system available. My daughter, at 6, is also very much into her Nintendo DS, Playstation Vita and Xbox 360.
Even frequenting my local Gamestop’s on a regular basis, I still notice that just about every week they’re adding a new product that may or may not have anything directly to do with the current console offerings. For instance they have a full section of used iPods, iPads and iPhones. They have brand new Beats By Dre headphones and other personal electronics.
Best Buy had said that they were going to go forward with a mall expansion after closing about 40 stores 18 months ago. They plan on expanding their Best Buy Mobile brand to include personal electronics and perhaps even video games. But Gamestop isn’t waiting to play catch up with Best Buy. It seems that they’re aggressively adding to their own personal electronics offerings.
While Beats By Dre are popular with the youngsters they’re also popular with their parents, or more importantly their parents wallets. Responsible young shoppers can easily save the $50-$75 needed to buy their favorite game. $200 for a pair of headphones or a tablet can be a daunting task.
Although Best Buy has a wide selection of video games, Gamestop is often easier for the busy parent shopper since its in the mall or the strip center, conveniently (and sometimes strategically) placed near other stores that may be on a parent’s journey. Now my generation can go into Gamestop pick up a couple of games for the kids, one or two for myself and knock out that other big ticket purchase that before, may have required a trip to Best Buy or HH Gregg.
Gamestop seems to be making another appeal to the Gamestop generation by offering wearable electronics ala heart rate monitors, activity trackers and smart watches.
Beginning Friday Gamestop is offering the Fitwatch Strapless Heart Rate Monitor in two colors for $59.99. They are also offering two activity trackers, the Go Run 2.4ghz in Black and Silver for $99.95 and the Go Walk Activity Tracker sleep monitor. They are also offering a hybrid smart/fit watch called the C200 Core Watch in two colors for $59.99.
And for those Beats By Dre fans Gamestop will offer the Beats By Dre Pill for $199 just after the first of the year.
An executive with Gamestop told us earlier this month that they would be attending CES 2014 this year and be looking for more personal technology products that fit the Gamestop brand. And, of course the Gamestop Generation.
