While everyone in the world seems to be reflecting on the last 10 years of life with Facebook, including Mark Zuckerberg, one company isn’t very happy with the social networking giant, and rightfully so.

Fifty Three is the developer of the highly popular app called Paper. No not the new news sharing app released by Facebook late last week, but the highly popular idea sharing app.

The original Paper isn’t some little app sitting in the back corners of the iTunes App Store in fact, the original Paper app has user and engagement numbers that some only dream of.

Over 100 million ideas have been shared using Paper. It was even Apple’s app of the year in 2012 so we are by no stretch of the imagination talking about a small, no named app.

So there was great confusion amongst many Paper users when Facebook announced their app with the exact same name. Had Fifty Three, been acquired? Was there some kind of partnership deal in place? These things would have been cause for celebration for Fifty Three’s co-founder and CEO George Petschnigg.

Nope none of those were the case and in fact Petschnigg and the team at Fifty Three learned about the new Paper probably the same way we did.

So what gives?

Facebook hasn’t said why they chose the name Paper but the New York Times has reported that Facebook won’t be changing the name of their app.

Really this is a shitty move from Facebook, especially in hindsight as Zuckerberg has paid homage to his startup roots in his anniversary post to Facebook’s users. Let us not forget either that he once very publicly battled the Winklevoss twins who insisted they had stolen his idea.

Now Facebook hasn’t stolen Fifty Three’s idea, just their name, which should be a really easy fix .

Happy Birthday Facebook
