According to a CNET survey, tablets are to be the most sought after item for tech shoppers this holiday season, with a giant total of 40% of respondents gifting said device. According to the survey, the main factors influencing the tablet choice are, not surprisingly, features/specs and price. In line with these factors, below are 7 non-iPad devices that you should consider if gifting a tablet this holiday season, from most to least expensive:

1.Microsoft Surface ($349-$449)

Microsoft Surface

The original Surface is much more than a tablet. The Surface is powered by the Windows RT operating system which can run the full Microsoft Office Suite, as you probably know from their media blitz. The Surface is much more of a work based tablet/hybrid than many of the below which are more focused on media consumption.    Although there have been mixed reviews, and a whole new Surface 2, the price point and the functionality of the Surface make it a perfect gift for the businessperson or student on your shopping list.

It looks like BestBuy will be offering the 32GB Surface for $199.99 on Black Friday

2. ASUS Transformer Pad TF300 ($259 – $389)

Asus Transformer padThe ASUS Transformer Pad is another laptop/tablet hybrid, though it is powered by Android rather than Windows. Being powered by Android can present some difficulties in terms of running various office applications, but both Google Drive and Kingsoft Office are compatible. The Transformer Pad features either 16GB or 32GB of flash storage, and has a micro SD card slot. While the ASUS offering is comparable to the Surface, it seems that its performance slants towards media consumption.

3. Lenovo – IdeaTab Miix2 8′ ($299.99 from Amazon)

Lenovo - IdeaTab Miix 8The IdeaTab Miix2 is the smallest tablet on the list so far. Although 8 inches is on the small side, it is not so small as to be unusable – though the size has us wondering about the UI and UX of the pre-loaded Microsoft Office. The Mixx2 has an incredibly powerful Intel Atom Quad-Core Processor, and is powered by Windows 8.1.  All-in-all, the Miix2 is one of the best smaller Windows tablets.

4. Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8′ ($249 on Amazon)

Samsung Galaxy tab 3

The Galaxy Tab 3 8′ runs on Android 4.2.2 (Jellybean) and performs quite well. Essentially, the 8 inch Tab is blown up version of the Galaxy S4 smartphone.1.5GHz Dual-Core Processor, and 16 GB Flash Memory, with a MicroSD slot to expand.

5. Google Nexus 7 Tablet ($199 from Walmart)

Google Nexus 7 tabletBy almost all accounts, the Nexus 7 is the best tablet in the price range. The Verge Editor-in-chief, Joshua Topolsky, gave the tablet a glowing review, “Google’s Nexus 7 isn’t just an excellent tablet for $200. It’s an excellent tablet, period.” Further, CNET said of the Google device, “Pound for pound, the Nexus 7 is the best small tablet you can buy.” Finally Engadget listed the Nexus 7 as the best 7 or 8 inch tablet available and argued, “From a pure technology standpoint, no small tablet comes close to the new Nexus 7.” There is really nothing else that needs to be said of the device.

 6. Barnes & Noble Nook HD+ ($149 – $179)

nook HD+While the previous Nook iterations had some substantial shortcomings, Barnes & Noble has rectified their mistakes with the 9 inch Nook HD+. The Nook HD+ has a 1,920 x 1,280 display for crying out lout. The Barnes & Noble device runs a heavily skinned up version of Android. A quality tabled for a low cost.

7. Kindle Fire HD ($139 – $169)

Kindle FireAlthough the reviews of the Amazon tablet have been somewhat mixed, there is hardly anything negative to be said of the device’s performance. Rather, the UX is a little strange, with ads and strange interface elements throughout. Though the operating system is a heavily skinned version of Android 4.0.3, it is almost indistinguishable from the Google OS. That said, it is a steal for $139. On top of that, BestBuy is offering the Kindle Fire HD for $99 as a Black Friday Doorbuster.
