I don’t think a day goes by that outspoken rapper and soon to be hubby of Kim Kardashian, Kanye West, makes the 24 hour news cycle. Rarely does it touch the techsphere, until now.
Tuesday afternoon eonline reported that Kanye West recently spent some time in Las Vegas with Zappos founder Tony Hsieh. Now anyone in the tech community knows that Tony Hsieh has an impecable reputation of being nice, honest and committed to helping young tech companies. In fact he’s invested hundreds of millions of dollars in revitalizing downtown Las Vegas and their tech community.
While Kanye has had plenty of success in the music business, he’s been venturing out into other endeavors, and definitely fits the bill of an entrepreneur. So it wasn’t out of line for Tony Hsieh to offer Kanye some advice on what to focus on. There’s no telling what Kanye’s response was to Hsieh in person but recently taped a podcast with Bret Easton Ellis , who’s working on a movie project with Kanye.
This is how he recanted the conversation with Hsieh:
I got into this giant argument with the head of Zappos that he’s trying to tell me what I need to focus on. Meanwhile, he sells all this s–t product to everybody, his whole thing is based off of selling s–t product,” West stated.
Hsieh must be doing something right he sold Zappos to Amazon in 2009 for nearly $1 billion dollars and as I said earlier he invested hundreds of millions of dollars in his Downtown Project. While Kanye does well himself, he reportedly only has a net worth of $100 million.
Edit: Fixed spelling error in “rapper” as pointed out in the comments
