smartmiotopWearable technology has swept the 2014 International CES. We can’t begin to tell you how many fitness trackers and monitors we saw. They come in all shapes and sizes from tags to bracelets to smart watches. A lot of them are great, some of them are junk, but such is the lay of the land this year. But one thing remains common for all of those devices except for one. The latest wearable technology helps you monitor your workout, and doesn’t actively participate in it.

Sure there are plenty of marketers that would argue that keeping up with your workout is in fact part of the workout, but SmartMio is different.

SmartMio is electronic muscle stimulation and an app. As you can see in the video below, the device attaches to the users muscles. The user decides what muscles they want to work on and whether or not they’re looking to work on speed, strength or a post workout.

SmartMio1Once the device is attached to the users muscles it sends a Bluetooth signal to the smartphone app which lets the user decide exactly what kind of workout and the intensity of the workout they need. But SmartMio’s Chief Marketing Officer, Filipp Almakov is quick to point out that SmartMio is meant as a compliment for a workout.

“it allows the user to keep working on their strength and conditioning goals outside of the gym” Almakov told Techfaster.com. SmartMio’s sensors can go under the users clothing, comfortably, and workouts can be done while driving, in the house relaxing, even at a meeting or a conference like CES.

Almakov tells us that electronic muscle stimulation is big in Europe and it seems to be big in the United States as well, amongst hardcore trainers. In researching electronic muscle stimulation in the United States, it appears that more trainers want to use electronic muscle stimulation but cost and convenience seem to be barriers to entry.

SmartMio actually solves both of these problems. At under $200 for the entire set up it means that those serious about training can perform electronic muscle stimulation in the comfort and privacy of their own homes.

SmartMio will roll out in Europe and other parts of the globe over the coming months. The company is currently working on getting their 510k FDA approval so that they can market it in the US as well. We’re confident once approved, there will be a lot of people using SmartMio.

The company will use Indiegogo to crowdfund their first orders next month. Find out more at getsmartmio.com
