Terrafugia-LogOver the weekend the tech press went crazy over news that Google purchased Boston firm, Boston Dynamics, a company that makes military robots. That acquisition was one of many that are helping to support Andy Rubin’s current moonshot working on robotics for the internet giant.

Of course the purchase of Boston Dynamics makes perfect sense with what Rubin’s working on and will hopefully make Google’s robotics initiatives come to fruition even quicker. However, there’s another hot tech company in Massachusetts that Google probably already has their eye on.

The company, Terrafugia, has a drivable airplane in production already called the “Transition” the Reuters video below shows the airplane with folding wings, and the ability to drive on regular streets. The idea with this vehicle is that pilots can take their plane home rather than having to leave it and lease hangar space.

But that’s not what Terrafugia’s moon shot is. The company, led by Dr. Carl Dietrich, is working on bringing a safe, flying car to market. As Dietrich reveals in the video interview, not only are they bringing a flying car to market, that car can fly itself, something that I’m sure Google’s Larry Page and Sergey Brin would fall in love with. Everyone pretty much knows that Google is working on a “self driving” car.

Dietrich goes onto explain that many aircraft today have sophisticated auto pilot systems. Those kind of systems would be the backbone of the flying portion of Terrafugia’s car. They are hoping to produce a vehicle which will require no formal training as a pilot. They are able to do this by empowering the computer systems that run the TF-X to fly itself.

Basically, the driver will input their destination into the vehicle’s computer and it will find the best route to the location, even if that location requires the user at least partially fly to it. Traffic, wind speed, and other important factors play a part in the safe operation of this vehicle, which hopefully won’t require any kind of flight training or pilots license to fly.

Admittedly, right now the TF-X is only a prototype and a demo video, but the company is hopeful that they will make it to market with the TF-X by 2015. No word on what pricing will bel
