dominoWhen you think about the latest and greatest in innovation and technology Domino’s doesn’t necessarily come to the top of your head. Well, unless you’re thinking about rocket fuel for developers, designers and company founders. But alas, that’s not why we found Domoino’s at the Showstoppers event at CES on Tuesday evening.

What may come as a shock to you, is the fact that not only did Domino’s have a booth at this CES event, they also had an engineer manning the booth. Not some pizza engineer calibrating how many pepperoni’s go for optimum pizza taste but a software engineer. I know you’re thinking why in the world does Domino’s need software engineers. I assure you it’s not to develop new boxes.

But the reason he was there, was actually pretty cool.

Domino’s has embraced technology. They told me at CES that right now a little over 40% of their ordering happens online. What’s more is the fact that once a Domino’s customer goes online to order that pizza, they very rarely ever call the store again. Online ordering and app ordering leave less room for error on the side of the country’s biggest pizza delivery chain.\

So now comes the next step.

The ability to order Domino’s fresh pizza, pasta, sandwiches and wings right from your car. I know I know you can pick up your mobile phone anywhere and order online, by app or the old fashioned way. Domino’s though, decided to partner with nearby Ford Motor Company and their Ford Sync system.

Ford’s newer than 2010 with the Ford Sync system will have the ability to one touch order Domino’s pizza. Now they aren’t to the point where they can GPS to your car and deliver pizza to you on the highway. However, this is another step towards making pizza ordering even more convenient.

The Domino’s app on Ford Sync takes the customers easy order from their Domino’s pizza profile and let’s them order it with one click. A customer’s Domino’s Pizza Profile already has their payment information saved so one and done as they say.

The Domino’s Ford Sync app will also alert the customer as their pizza hits the delivery steps. When it’s prepared, baking, out of the oven and ready for pick up or delivery. If the customer’s “easy order” is a pick up order their food will be ready in the store. If it’s a delivery order it will go to their delivery destination.

So there you have it, that’s why Domino’s was at CES.
